When fitting copper asbestos head gaskets. Soak them in water for 24 hours before fitting them.

This softens up the asbestos and enables the gasket to compress and mould better to the imperfections in your cylinder head.

This is an old Rolls Royce method which I have used for years and I have been using the same gasket on my Salmson for nearly 30 years.

Salmsons, have no support around the stud holes and can only be torqued down to 22lbs maximum. So on a Seven it should work well.

This should also work with the modern replacement of gasket material in the new copper gaskets.
