Even as a teenager I never liked sticking my skinny finger into the spark plug hole to find the compression stroke, fearing the end would be sucked in and riveted over when the piston came back up!
This works a treat and is especially useful with a red hot engine when you need to change the magneto or retime your coil ignition on the road.
It is another of my spark plug recycles, in this case a ‘Lodge C3’ detachable type and a piece of half inch wooden dowel.
A brass screw stops the dowel shooting out under compression.
Total movement of the button is 3/8”, the screw is well clear of the piston.
